Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage

By Enok Columbie, licensed Life & Health agent · NPN 16449444 · Updated November 2026

Quick answer

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare to help pay your share of costs, and it lets you see any provider in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a different way to get your Part A and Part B benefits through a private plan, usually with a provider network and its own costs and benefits. You cannot have both at the same time.

Switching later

Your Medigap open enrollment period lasts 6 months, starting the month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. After that, in most states, companies can ask health questions and may charge more or turn you down. Certain situations give you a guaranteed right to buy Medigap — for example, if you try Medicare Advantage for the first time and leave within the first 12 months. Check Medicare.gov for the rules that apply to you.

How to decide

  • Do you want to keep your doctors without network rules?
  • Would you rather pay a higher premium for more predictable costs?
  • Do you travel often within the U.S.?
  • Which prescriptions do you take?

Common questions

No. Medigap works only with Original Medicare and cannot pay Medicare Advantage costs.

It depends on your health care use. Medicare Advantage plans often have lower monthly premiums but more copays when you get care. Medigap usually has a higher premium and more predictable costs.

You can return to Original Medicare during certain enrollment periods. Buying a Medigap policy may require health questions unless you have a guaranteed issue right.
