Health Insurance for Seniors

Original Medicare helps pay for many health costs, but it doesn’t cover everything. We help with coverage that can fill the gaps — Medicare Supplement (Medigap), dental, vision and hospital indemnity — and explain how Medicare works in plain language.

Coverage that works alongside Medicare

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) helps pay for many health costs, but not everything. These options can help with the gaps.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Helps pay some costs Original Medicare doesn’t, such as deductibles, copayments and coinsurance, depending on the plan you choose.

Medicare basics

Plain-language education on how Original Medicare and Parts A, B, C and D work. This website does not market or sell Medicare Advantage or Part D plans.

Dental & vision

Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover routine dental or vision care. Standalone plans can help with cleanings, exams, fillings and glasses. Some plans have waiting periods for major services.

Hospital indemnity

Pays a fixed cash benefit for covered hospital stays that you can use as you choose. It is supplemental coverage and does not replace Medicare or health insurance.

Health coverage questions

Do I need supplemental insurance with Medicare?

It is not required, but Original Medicare has deductibles and coinsurance with no yearly out-of-pocket limit. Many people add a Medicare Supplement plan or other coverage to help with those costs. The right choice depends on your health, budget and doctors.

What is the difference between Medigap and Medicare Advantage?

Medigap works alongside Original Medicare to help pay your share of costs. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a different way to get your Medicare benefits through a private plan. You cannot use a Medigap plan to pay Medicare Advantage costs.

Does Medicare cover dental and vision?

Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental care, such as cleanings, fillings and dentures, or routine eye exams and glasses. Standalone dental and vision plans can help.
