Health insurance
Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, helps pay some of the costs Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. It works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B).

You keep Original Medicare. Medicare pays its share first, then your Medigap plan helps pay yours, depending on the plan.
Plans are named with letters, like Plan G or Plan N. In most states, the benefits for each letter are the same from company to company — the prices are not.
You can generally see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, with no referrals needed. Medicare SELECT plans may use a network.
Your Medigap open enrollment period lasts 6 months, starting the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, companies generally can’t turn you down or charge you more because of your health. After it ends, you may have to answer health questions in most states.
We compare Medigap prices from several companies for the plan you choose. Rates vary by age, health, state and plan.
Common questions
Depending on the plan, Medigap helps pay Medicare Part A and B coinsurance and copayments, the Part A deductible, skilled nursing facility coinsurance and some emergency care when traveling abroad. Medigap plans do not include prescription drug, dental, vision or hearing coverage.
No. Medigap works only with Original Medicare. If you join a Medicare Advantage plan, a Medigap policy cannot pay your Medicare Advantage costs.
Medigap does not cover prescriptions, so most people with Medigap also have a Medicare Part D drug plan. This website does not market or sell Part D plans; you can compare drug plans at Medicare.gov.
