Life insurance

Guaranteed issue life insurance is a type of whole life policy that does not ask health questions or require a medical exam for applicants within the eligible ages. In exchange, it usually has a waiting period — often two years — before the full benefit is paid for death from natural causes, and it typically costs more than policies that ask health questions.
Most guaranteed issue policies have a graded or limited benefit during the first years, often two. If death from natural causes happens during that time, many policies refund the premiums paid, sometimes with interest, instead of paying the full benefit. Many plans pay the full benefit for accidental death from the start. Always check the policy details.
Guaranteed issue can be a good fit for people with serious health conditions who may not qualify for other coverage. If you are in reasonable health, a simplified-issue plan that asks a few health questions may cost less and pay the full benefit sooner.
A licensed agent can review your health history and check whether you may qualify for a plan with health questions before you choose guaranteed issue. Rates vary by age, health, state and plan.
If you are within the eligible ages and meet the company’s other conditions, such as state availability, you cannot be turned down because of your health. The waiting period still applies.
The company does not know your health, so it prices the policy for a wider range of risk. That is why plans that ask health questions often cost less for people who qualify.
It depends on the policy. Many refund the premiums paid, sometimes with interest, for death from natural causes during the waiting period, and pay the full benefit for accidental death.
